Data-Driven Approaches for
Analyzing and Managing Scholarly Data

General
While newly emerging concepts such as Open Scholarship are changing the way scholarly artifacts have been evaluated and disseminated, the traditional model of scholarly communication through written manuscripts is still the paradigm of research dissemination.
Although digitization reduced a lot of marginal costs in preparing of such materials, the effort for in such scholarly communication still remains.
However, the way scientific communication is used to be is still remaining the same.
The need for new technologies and media in scientific workflows to assist interactions of researchers and stakeholders within the scientific communities is becoming more visible.
One initiative towards this vision started with the expanding growth of Open Access as the underlying policy of publishing.
These policies aimed to make the content of scientific works available for everyone, anywhere in the world to read and access and build up on the work of others.
The consequence have been free available of a large portion of research articles.
Basically, researchers are supposed to discover knowledge and spread it around.
Whereas, looking into the scientific communication and the way it is done today, researchers are spending a lot of time to write their papers, to review other related works and to find out about related events, related journals, people working on similar or related topics, etc.
In this workshop we want to encourage researchers from different fields (data management, information retrieval, digital
libraries, graph databases, machine learning, recommender systems, visualization, etc.) to combine their resources in
order to exploit the possibilities of scholarly data.
Despite the existence of several search engines, bibliography websites and digital libraries (e.g., Google Scholar , CiteSeerX , Microsoft Academic
Search, DBLP, arXiv etc.) a comprehensive content analysis beyond title and abstract is not supported yet.
Our global vision is a uniform system combining all forms of scholarly data offering a comprehensive semantic search and
advanced analytics including:
- fostering more efficient, effective, and easy publishing of scholarly artifacts and their metadata,
- publishing and interlinking of scholarly metadata with high reusability,
- providing quality assessment methods and analysis on top of such enriched metadata and
- enabling a multidisciplinary monitoring of aggregated metadata.
Topics
The main goals of this workshop are to facilitate the access of scholarly data, to enhance the ability to assess the
quality of scholarly data and to foster the development of analysis tools for scholarly data. The following topics will be addressed:
- facilitating scholarly data, i.e. representation and integration in order to build more effective knowledge sharing, and analysis
- assessment of scholarly data, i.e. link and knowledge discovery
- use-cases of well-managed scholarly data, i.e. querying and visualization of scholarly metadata
The expected outcomes of the workshop include:
- Scientific papers and presentations that show the latest developments in applying database and machine learning technologies
to scholarly data management, analytics and visualization
- Networking opportunities for participants from different fields to identify common grounds and collaboration opportunities
as well as open gaps
(for a more comprehensive list please refer to Topics at a Glance).
Registration
The workshop will be held in conjunction with the 22nd European Conference on
Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2018) September 2-5, 2018, Budapest, Hungary.
For registration, please refer to the ADBIS 2018 main websites: http://www.adbis2018.org/
Submission
Submissions should present original results and substantial new work not currently under review or published elsewhere.
This workshop accepts regular research papers (up to 12 pages) and short papers (up to 8 pages). Papers must comply with
the Springer formatting guidelines (instructions for authors are available at
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html).
Papers should be formatted in LATEX and submitted in PDF format using the online submission system
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=amsd2018.
Workshop papers will be published by Springer-Verlag in the 'Communications in Computer and Information Science' (CCIS) series.
The authors of the best workshop papers will be invited to prepare extended versions of their papers after the workshop. Following an additional
round of reviews, the new paper version will appear in a special issue of an international journal (e.g., AMCS or FCDS were used in 2017).
